Turangi’s mall to get makeover
Turangi's mall to get makeover
29 August 2014
Turangi's main shopping area will be getting a fresh new look in time for summer with stage three of the town centre's revitalisation expected to start next month.
Taupo District Council this week agreed for Higgins Contractors to carry out the work, which will see the front and rear areas of the shopping mall area revamped.
The work at the front of the mall will include the installation of timber decking, landscaping, a pedestrian crossing and a drinking fountain.
At the rear power infrastructure will be improved and there will also be landscaping, lighting and a stage built.
An earlier plan to include a shared space with vehicle access has been removed in response to feedback from the community.
Council's strategic projects manager Andrew Boden said the third stage of the revitalisation would complement the first two which saw the beautification of the entrance to town and a skate park and play area developed at Te Kapua Park.
Stage three will provide an attractive entrance to the existing shopping mall for the local community and help to entice visitors in, he said. We want to create vibrancy in the area to encourage people to spend time in the town centre and support local retailers.
Work is expected to begin in early September and be completed by early December.
Members of the public are invited to a Community Update on September 16.
