Upgrade for velodrome gets underway
Taupō's velodrome at Owen Delany Park is being resealed and users can to look forward to a much smoother and faster ride.
The first phase of the upgrade outside of the track itself has been completed, with lighting units and poles removed to allow access for the heavy machinery that will carry out the resealing work. Safety barriers around the track have also been removed while the existing seal is taken up and the surface prepared for the new seal.
Manager infrastructure Denis Lewis said the velodrome is popular with cyclists, particularly during winter months when road cycling is less than ideal. "Even in the summer not everyone wants to be out on the roads, so the velodrome offers a great location for training and time trialling. It's a well-used facility that is popular with locals and visitors alike, and the resealing work will make for much smoother riding."
The track is closed during the course of the works and is expected to re-open in early-February.
