Water main extension to improve summer flow
30 October 2015
Taupo's water main network is being extended to accommodate higher use over the summer months as demand increases.
The main will be installed along State Highway 1 from Richmond Avenue to just south of Aubrey Crescent Reserve, servicing properties in Wharewaka and Rainbow Point. It will be about 600m long and reduce the amount of pressure the current network is under during summer by increasing capacity from the Titoki reservoir.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said the council needed to ensure residents and visitors have adequate water pressure and an uninterrupted flow when they need it most.
Over the past few summers we had issues with low pressure in Wharewaka and Rainbow Point during times of peak demand, he said. We need to make sure the water network provides consistently good water flow.
Disturbance to residents is likely to be minimal, but a traffic management plan will be in place to ensure contractors' safety while they work.
Mr Lewis said the water would have to be temporarily shut down to some properties when the connection of the new pipe was made, but affected residents would get at least 24 hours' notice. This was likely to happen in mid-November.
Work is set to start on Tuesday and will be carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
