Water restrictions in place
2 April 2014
Taupo District residents are being asked to only use sprinklers and irrigation systems on alternate days due to low lake levels.
Taupo District Council infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said the extended period of dry weather had seen the levels of Lake Taupō drop to the trigger level for water restrictions. This means people will only be able to use watering systems between 6am and 8am and 6pm and 8pm on alternate days.
People whose properties end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 can use sprinklers on odd numbered calendar days, while those whose addresses end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 can use theirs on even numbered calendar days.
Mr Lewis said water was a precious resource and it needed to be protected.
We realise that restrictions can cause an inconvenience for some of our residents, but we've reached the point that action needs to be taken, he said. If all of us do our bit to reduce our water use now, hopefully we won't need to put stronger measures in place.
