Water restrictions across the Taupo District have been lifted

Sprinkler restrictions put in place in the lead up to the holiday season have now been lifted.

With heavy rain across the district during the last few days, and more predicted, these restrictions are no longer needed to manage water demand.

Water restrictions in place due to high water demand

Water restrictions limiting the time sprinklers and garden irrigation systems can be used have been put in place across the Taupō District from today.

This means sprinklers and outdoor irrigation systems can only be used between 7am and 9am and 7pm and 9pm. Hand held hosing is still permitted.

Taupō District Council operations group manager Kevin Strongman said water use across the district had risen rapidly in the past few days and restrictions were needed to help manage demand proactively so we can limit the likelihood of harsher restrictions being put in place.

Although the lake held a lot of water, the council could only process a limited amount and it needed to be closely monitored during this high use period, he said.

"A number of our neighbouring districts also have water restrictions in place."
