Widening of Great Lake Walkway planned
7 October 2015
The Great Lake Walkway that stretches from the Lake Terrace water treatment plant to the yacht club on Ferry Road is set to be widened and concreted to make it easier to use.
The work will make the path wheelchair and buggy-friendly and contractor Fulton Hogan is expected to begin the work this week. The path will be widened from its current 1.4 metres to 2.5 metres.
Facilities manager Andrew Boden said the new path would be concrete, which will make for a smoother journey. The current path was old and starting to deteriorate, he said. It's not really wide enough to accommodate the growing number of people using it, he said. This work will both improve its condition and make it wide enough for everyone to use.
Some car parks on Ferry Road will be closed off for a few days at a time between October 19 and 28 while the concrete is laid. Four to five car parks will close at a time and these will change as the work moves along the road to allow the concrete truck to access the site. There will still be ample parking in the area.
The walkway widening is expected to be completed by Christmas, ready for the rush of summer holiday visitors.
Our natural environment is one of our greatest assets and we want to keep our lakefront looking good for both visitors and residents, Mr Boden said. The new path will ensure one of our most popular paths is in good condition and will last the distance.
