Work on lakefront to combat erosion
4 September 2014
An eroded stretch of bank along the Taupo lakefront is being reinforced to minimise possible damage in heavy rain or flooding.
The area sits between the start of Titiraupenga Street and the Hole In One Challenge on Lake Terrace. Work began this week with the erection of fences to protect the area.
Taupo District Council's stormwater and solid waste asset manager Brent Aitken said the work would include the reinforcement of the route that excess stormwater would follow during heavy rain. This would ensure the banks would not further deteriorate during such an event and the town's infrastructure would not be affected, he said.
Matting material is being laid along the flow path and rocks would be used to support the bank. Another section would be reinforced with sandbags which would be planted with appropriate vegetation to maintain the natural look of the area.
We want to ensure this section of lakefront is safe and strong, but still maintain its appearance, Mr Aitken said. Discussions with iwi had led to the decision to plant the sand bags to keep the area looking good.
The project is being jointly funded by Waikato Regional Council and Taupo District Council from its existing stormwater and lakeshore erosion budgets. The work is expected to cost about $70,000.
The erosion control work is scheduled for completion by the end of the month.
