Turangi to host Inter-Council Sports Tournament
The spotlight will be on Turangi next month, when more than 400 local government staff from around the country descend on the southern end of the lake for the 2019 Inter-Council Sports Tournament.
The sports tournament is an annual event held in a different location each year, and will be at Turangitukua Park on Saturday, March 9. It was held in Taupō in 2017.
District events manager Steve Giles said 409 people from 20 councils were registered to attend this year’s event in 25 teams.
“It’s amazing to have this large-scale event in our backyard again,” Mr Giles said. “It was a huge success in Taupō and will be a great boost for Turangi. We estimate Turangi will see just under $60,000 pumped into the economy through accommodation, food and activities.”
Mr Giles said the Inter-Council Sports Tournament committee wanted a provincial feel to the tournament this year and the council’s events team put forward a strong proposal for Turangi early last year, which was accepted.
“We know Turangi has fantastic accommodation, eateries and sports venues that would make the tournament a great experience for these teams, as well as showing them what the southern end of the lake has to offer,” he said.
Mr Giles said the tournament had received a lot of support from local businesses, with spot prizes, lunch and breakfast deals, coffee vouchers and discounted activities.
This year the organising team was introducing a new app to help teams navigate the day. It would send out alerts and show results and current draws.
Spectators are free to attend to watch councils battle it out at Turangitukua Park, Turangi, from 7.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday, March 9.
