Spend in Turangi up last quarter
Over $17 million was spent in the Turangi area in the three months to December, with spend up 7.5 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.
The figures come from the latest Taupō District Council Marketview Report, which was presented at this month's Turangi Tongariro Community Board. It calculates total spend based on card use and divides the data into groups.
In Turangi, $17,154,000 was spent from October to December, mostly in the central and mall areas. These areas combined generated $12.2 million in spending. Spend in the mall area was up 12.9 per cent, while the amount spent in the central area was up 6.7 per cent. Other areas included the industrial area, eastern area, north of the river and the north east area.
New Zealand cardholders from outside the local area spent the most, with local cardholders the next biggest spenders.
Head of economic development and business transformation John Ridd said the increase in spending was great news for Turangi businesses.
"It's great to hear that residents are supporting local businesses, and visitors from around New Zealand are spending generously while they are there too," he said.
Marketview Reports are commissioned by the council for the Taupō District quarterly and can be used to compare areas, districts and regions throughout New Zealand.
