Progression coming to Taupō Museum
Printmaker Maggie Dawson and potter Marita Green are sharing Taupō Museum's main gallery space with their exhibition, Progression, which opens on Friday.
Dawson is a Taupō local who many people will know for her images depicting birds, flowers and landscapes.
In this exhibition, Maggie explores her experience of a long birthday lunch which became a pivotal life event. She created a handmade book based on the event and its images combine the joy of celebration, food and friendship. The book is on display and each page is hand-printed and then bound.
Also on display will be her social commentary on Kauri dieback alongside her often humorous observations of garden-life. She uses bright bursts of colour to punctuate and enliven.
Green was also born and raised in Taupō, but now lives in New Plymouth. She held her last sculptural exhibition at Taupō Museum five years ago, and since then has focussed on functional pottery, learning the craft of wheel-throwing to make cups, bowls and plates.
The body of work she is exhibiting sees the progression of artistic ideas as well as ceramic techniques, as Green lays out some of a potter's artistic process.
Green describes her work as contemporary, and uses colour and illustration to tell her story, exploring consumerism, colonialism, and spirituality.
The exhibition runs from March 2 to April 8.
