Great Lake Walkway update
The upgrade of the Great Lake Walkway shared path has kicked back into gear this week, following the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 shutdown.
Our contractors are now working on two sections of the path. The Two Mile Bay area includes pedestrian safety measures and path realignment, encompassing the Two Mile Bay Sailing Centre car park, while the other key location on Lake Terrace, opposite Tremaine Avenue, includes erosion control measures.
Taupo District Council landscape architect Fraser Scott said both sections of the path will undergo a transformation, with improved safety and erosion control measures a top priority.
“The site opposite Tremaine Avenue is urgent due to the erosion issues along this stretch and the risk they pose to existing infrastructure such as the road, path and underground services,” he said.
“The work around the Two Mile Bay Sailing Centre addresses the issue of cyclists and pedestrians trying to navigate their way through the existing path between the venue and the car park area. This is a narrow stretch of land and the new alignment will address this by separating out the bar and restaurant activity from the path.
“Being able to address these issues during level three will ensure we gain some great construction efficiencies and lower lake levels make this an ideal time to get it all completed.”
The Two Mile Bay Sailing Centre will remain open and pedestrian access will be maintained for takeaway pickup.
Both areas have detours for users in place and we ask that you take extra care around the worksites.
