Five Mile Bay water connection work underway

It’s all go in Five Mile Bay with the installation of new water infrastructure now underway. Contractors have been busy installing the first length of the new water main on Mahuta Road over the past 10 days, the first of the work that will last until the end of April.

The project will see Five Mile Bay ratepayers able to connect to the Taupō water scheme if they choose to, providing them with treated water that meets the New Zealand Drinking-water Standards. Pipelines and connections will be laid along Tawhaa and Mahuta roads and access roads and tobies installed at property boundaries.

Currently, Five Mile Bay residents access water from bores and many in the community have expressed a desire to connect to the town supply. The project was included in the Long-term Plan 2018-28.

The work is currently focussing on the western side of Mahuta Road, with contractors having completed the eastern side earlier this week. This part of the work covers about 2.3km and is expected to take about five weeks.

Residents and visitors to Five Mile Bay can expect minor disruptions while the work was carried out, with heavy machinery in operation during working hours from Monday to Saturday.

Ratepayers can choose to have their connections activated, or not, and have been contacted individually to communicate their decision.
