More bilingual signs for Turangi CBD
Following on from the well-received new bilingual signs put up in Turangi’s central business district earlier in the year, a new set of signs has now been installed near the Ngawaka Place and Te Rangitautahanga Road intersection.
Translations for the new signs were provided by Ngāti Tūrangitukua and acting Chair of the Turangi Tongariro Community Board Rob Severne says they are a welcome addition to the town, particularly as they are located where they will help guide locals and visitors alike.
“The new signs are a great way to give our use of te reo a boost,” Mr Severne said, “and to also give directions to English and te reo speakers. But they are also a great representation of the partnership that exists here and that we can build upon going forward.
"They have arrived at a great time, coinciding with the upgrade to the entrance to the town and the work being done to replace the kerbing and channelling in residential streets in Turangi – and all in time for summer.”
“When the first of our bilingual signs were installed our community board issued a friendly challenge to the rest of the country to join us in using bilingual signage - and we’re reiterating that now!”
Additional signs featuring English and te reo Māori are planned for locations like schools or cemeteries/urupa in the coming months.
