Taupō District Council actively supports reducing the amount of rubbish that is sent to landfill through recycling programmes and partnerships.
Council contracts engineer Parva Zareie says that the programme aims to protect our environment by keeping batteries from landfill, although there are also health and safety factors involved.
“If batteries are left to deteriorate, they can become hazardous to our health and are also a fire risk – they have been known to cause fires in our kerbside collection trucks.”
Collecting and recycling batteries means that valuable components can be saved for reuse, and it keeps them out of landfill.
“E-Cycle is the company we are working with at the Broadlands Road facility, and we can now accept single use and rechargeable batteries,” says Parva.
This includes AA, AAA, C, D and 9V size batteries, as well as cell phone and laptop batteries. These batteries usually weigh less than 1kg and are used in devices such as toys, cameras, remotes, torches, and cordless power tools.
Pierced, leaking or damaged batteries will not be accepted as these can be harmful to staff handling them.
The collected batteries are sent and sorted at a facility in Auckland, before being shipped to processors in Australia.
Recycling batteries and reusing components in the production of new batteries also limits new resources being extracted from the earth.
“This is another win for our environment”, says Parva.
Council is currently working towards offering the same service at Tūrangi Transfer Station.
