Tūrangi street revitalisation project making good progress
The ongoing project to revitalise Tūrangi streets is making good progress, with work currently underway in Raukura and Noni Streets and Patikura Place.
The project aims to replace kerbing and channeling damaged by tree roots to reduce water pooling and make the footpaths safer for our community.
Project manager Peter van Niekerk said despite some delays due to disruptions to supply chains, the project was going well and was being warmly received by locals.
“We’ve had great feedback from those living in the streets where we have put in new kerbs and guttering,” he said.
“Many people have remarked on what a difference it makes to drainage and also to the appearance of the streets. The removal of trees has also meant many residents get a lot more sunlight into their properties and of course, it is also making quite a difference in regard to the amount of leaves in the streets.”
Mr van Niekirk also said the programme to replace many of the trees removed in the project was getting back underway as the weather began to warm up.
“Unfortunately we had several instances of vandalism to the trees we replanted which has been really disheartening to the local residents and also the team working on the project. We’re hoping to work with some local schools on the next phase of replanting and involve them in the project on the streets around their kura.”
