Musical double whammy for Taupō town this Waitangi Weekend

It’s a musical double whammy for Taupō town this Waitangi Weekend with not one, but two incredible international gigs performing at Taupō Amphitheatre at Riverside Park – Taupō Summer Concert and DJ Fatboy Slim.

There will be lots of traffic and pedestrian activity in and around the town centre so please expect delays and plan your trip!

Thousands of revellers are expected to enjoy the international acts performing at Taupō Amphitheatre, Riverside Park.

🚫Redoubt Street is closed as follows:

  • 12noon Friday 3 February to 10.30pm Saturday 4 February
  • 2pm to 11.30pm Sunday 5 February

🚫 Countdown car park access on Tongariro Street is closed Saturday 9am-12pm and Sunday 2pm-11.30pm. Please access via Nukuhau Street during these times.

🚫 If you plan on using the Taupō Boat Harbour Marina or Nukuhau Marina please be aware of increased pedestrian activity and take note of the restricted area on the Waikato River 6am to 11pm Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 February. For more information, please visit Lake Taupō Harbourmaster Facebook page.

🚫 Riverside Park dump station will be closed Friday 3 February to Sunday 5 February. Please use the closest alternative sites located at Stag Park, Napier Road and 2 Mile Bay Boat Ramp.

If you’re going to the concerts:

🚗 ‘Love is a battlefield’ but parking isn't with two car parks at Gates Park and Tongariro North Domain open at 9am Saturday for Summer Concert and 2pm Sunday for Fatboy Slim.

  • For northbound traffic: Parking is available at the Tongariro North Domain with entry and exit via the northbound lane of Tongariro Street. There are several routes you can take through the CBD (e.g. Ruapehu Street and Te Heuheu Street) to avoid the busy Spa Road roundabout area.
  • For southbound traffic: We suggest you access Gates Park car park north of the Control Gates Bridge or use street parking in the upper Spa Road area (Oruanui/Nukuhau/Runanga Streets) for easy access to Taupō Amphitheatre.

🚶‍♀️‘She’s got legs and she knows how to use them’ to walk to and from the venue instead of driving, if you can!

If you’re not going:

🙏 We must ‘Praise you’ for avoiding town at the busy times before and after the concerts so approx. Saturday 9am to 1pm and 5pm to 7pm, and Sunday evening from 5pm to 11pm.

🤫 ‘We’ll keep no secrets from you’, the ETA will be the best way to get around and avoid the madness in the town centre.

Haven't visited Taupō in a while?

We can't wait to welcome you back to the Taupō District over Waitangi Weekend. Taupō town centre is being transformed with an exciting pedestrian-friendly lake front development at Roberts Reserve. This has changed how the traffic flows through the town centre. We've got a couple of tips for drivers to make your journey a little easier.

If you’re coming into Taupō from the north:

  • Bypass the first Taupō entrance at Wairakei
  • Continue on State Highway 1 using the Eastern Taupō Arterial (often called the ETA or Thermal Explorer Highway)
  • Take any of the next three signposted exits into Taupō

If you get off SH1 and come into Taupō through Wairakei and over the Waikato River, there is no longer a through-road to take you from the Spa Road roundabout (beside Countdown) directly to the lakefront as you may have done in the past.

Getting to the lakefront:

  • Turn left at the Spa Road roundabout on entry into town
  • Continue to the new traffic lights on Spa Road
  • Turn right into Titiraupenga Street
  • Continue all the way to the lakefront and Lake Terrace

This is now the fastest and most efficient way to drive through town.
