The iconic IRONMAN New Zealand race is back in Taupō this weekend!

Our community is well known for its level of energy and support from the sidelines, and our volunteer network take great pride in making IRONMAN weekend and event to remember!

The main race day is Saturday 4 March, but please be aware of the various road closures that will be in effect at times between 7am Friday 3 March to 2.30am Sunday 5 March.

To keep everybody safe on race day, the best way to get around and into town will be via the ETA (East Taupō Arterial), Centennial Drive, Spa Road and Napier Road, as shown on the map.

The CBD remains open throughout the event, though we suggest you plan your trip in advance. The southbound lane of Tongariro Street is open from Spa Road to Tūwharetoa Street.

Broadlands Road will also be closed, which will include the State Highway 1 off-ramp at Broadlands Road. Our landfill on Broadlands Road will be closed for the day.

For those residents on a road that is closed, as shown on the map, if you need to exit or return to your property, please call the IRONMAN info line on 021 072 7258 for advice and escort to get you safely across the road closures.

The full list of closures is as follows:

⛔ Lake Terrace – Rifle Range Road to Tui Street from 7am Friday to 2.30am Sunday.

⛔ Lake Terrace – Ruapehu Street to Mere Road from 2am Saturday to 2.30am Sunday.

⛔ Lake Terrace – Mere Road to Napier Road from 6am to 7pm Saturday.

⛔ Rifle Range Road – Lake Terrace to Roberts Street from 7am Friday to 7.30pm Saturday.

⛔ Rifle Range Road – Lake Terrace to Mere Road from 2am to 7pm Saturday.

⛔ Rifle Range Road – Mere Road to Tauhara Road from 6am to 7pm Saturday.

⛔ Tongariro Street (northbound lane) – Ferry Road to Spa Road from 2am Saturday to 2.30am Sunday.

⛔ Tongariro Street (southbound lane) – Tūwharetoa Street to Ferry Road from 2am Saturday to 2.30am Sunday (Restricted access available to KFC).

⛔ Kaimanawa Street – Lake Terrace to Roberts Street from 2am to 7pm Saturday (Access to Fire Station and Tesla drivers only).

⛔ Tauhara Road – Spa Road to Miro Street from 6am to 7pm Saturday (‘slip’ lane available from Miro Street to Hatton Street).

⛔ Broadlands Road – Miro Street to Taupō boundary from 6am to 6.30pm Saturday (Broadlands Road Landfill closed).

⛔ Centennial Dr – Rakaunui Road to Broadlands Road from 6am to 3pm Saturday.

⛔ View Road – Aratiatia Road to Broadlands Road from 6am to 3pm Saturday.

Roberts Street will not be accessible from Tongariro Street. If you plan to visit the KFC drive-through you will need to enter Roberts Street via a temporary entrance on Ruapehu Street. Please refer to the map.

A temporary bus stop will also be in place on Pāora Hapi Street while Tongariro Street is closed.

The Taupō Boat Harbour and Marina remains open for business, accessible via Redoubt Street off Tongariro Street.

In the lead up to the event, there will be a lot of cyclists out training on the roads around our district, so please keep an eye out and give them a wide berth.
