Road closures for 2023 IRONMAN 70.3 Taupō

The legendary IRONMAN 70.3 is racing into Taupō this Saturday 9 December.

Watch as 1300 athletes complete an impressive 1.9km swim in the fresh waters of Lake Taupō, 90km cycle around the district and a 21.1km run along our Great Lake Pathway. If the kids want to get involved in the action, there’s a kid’s fun run on Friday 8 December.

This year’s event has the added opportunity for athletes to compete for qualifying slots to enter the Vinfast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in December 2024. For the first time ever, the Championship will be held here in New Zealand, right here in the Taupō District.

IRONMAN 70.3 Taupō event village and finish line is situated on Kaimanawa Reserve.

In the lead up to the event, there will be a lot of cyclists out training on the roads around our district, so please keep an eye out and give them a wide berth.

Speed restrictions and road closures are in effect from 7am Friday 8 December until 5pm Saturday 9 December.

Broadlands Road Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre will be closed on Saturday 9 December until 1pm, then operating as normal.

Road closures in effect from Friday 8 December:

⛔ Rifle Range Road from Lake Terrace to Roberts Street from Friday 8 December 7am to Saturday 9 December 5am.

Road closures in effect on Saturday 9 December:

⛔ Lake Terrace from Tītīraupenga Street to Rifle Range Road from 2am to 5pm.

⛔ Lake Terrace from Rifle Range Road to Mere Road from 2am to 5pm.

⛔ Lake Terrace from Mere Road to Napier Road from 5am to 2pm.

⛔ Kaimanawa Street from Lake Terrace to Roberts Street from 2am to 5pm. (Fire Station, Event Vehicle, EV Charging Station access only). Emergency service access will be maintained at all times.

⛔ Rifle Range Road from Lake Terrace to Tauhara Road from 5am to 2pm.

⛔ Tauhara Road from A C Baths Avenue to Miro Street from 5am to 2pm.

⛔ Broadlands Road from Miro Street to White Road from 5am to 1pm.

⛔ Centennial Drive from Rakaunui Road to Broadlands Road from 5am to 11am.

⛔ View Road from Aratiatia Road to Broadlands Road from 5am to 11am.

⛔ A detour will be in place at Ohaaki Road due to the Broadlands Road closure. South bound traffic use SH5 to Taupō.

⛔ SH1/ETA Broadlands Road off-ramps both directions closed from 6am to 2pm. Use Centennial Drive off ramps.
