Litter pick-up event nets New Year's haul
Volunteers at our New Year’s Day Taupō Litter Pick-up collected a whopping 250kg of rubbish.
Keeping Taupō District beautiful is a team effort and a mixture of locals, visitors and tamariki turned up to clean up Taupō’s lakefront and town centre, picking up rubbish and recyclables including:
- About 250kg of rubbish, with seven bags going to landfill.
- Lots of takeaway food containers. If you grab a takeaway, remember that only clean cardboard and plastics 1, 2 & 5 can be recycled - the rest needs to go in the bin.
- Nine crates (about 70kg) of recyclables, including glass bottles and cans. All lids and caps go in the rubbish, but unbroken glass and aluminium cans should be recycled.
Taupō District Council waste minimisation officer Shannon Hanson was happy with the reduced quantity of litter this year, although this may have been affected by fewer people heading out due to the bad weather the night before.
“Sadly, on New Year's Eve, our town and lakefront gets covered in bottles, smashed glass, fireworks, and more. It’s wonderful to see volunteers show up in the morning every year to help clean up the mess. A huge thanks to Tidy Taupō and the volunteers who gave up their time to help and put in a supreme effort to tidy up.”
We can all do our part to help keep Taupō District beautiful by reducing waste and using the correct litter and recycling bins, so let’s all get involved and look after the place we love. The 2023 Beautiful Awards recognised the whole district’s environmental efforts, but we couldn’t do it without you!
