Powerboats return to Taupō for high-speed racing this weekend
Taupō District Mayor David Trewavas says he is thrilled to welcome back competitive boats and racing to Lake Taupō this long weekend.
"It’s fantastic to see these boats back in action on the lake for all to enjoy," he said.
"A huge thank you to Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board and Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa for their support and approval. The long anniversary weekend in the Taupō District is going to be great for everyone with so many events on."
The boats will follow strict Ministry of Primary Industries protocols and a biosecurity plan to prevent the movement of any pests such as gold clams.
"We’ve invested a huge amount of money and resources into protecting this lake and we want to continue doing that," Mr Trewavas said.
The boat operators will Check, Clean, and Dry using strict decontamination procedures. For more information about the clams and how to correctly prevent their spread, go to the MPI website.
Hydro racing will be on the lake Saturday and Sunday, with drivers racing between 9am to 12pm Saturday and 9am to 4pm Sunday. The New Zealand Powerboat Nationals will be out on the water on Sunday from 1pm to 3pm.
Expect some noise and a busier than normal boat ramp area at Parakiri/Boat Harbour and Two Mile Bay.
Please take care in and around the lakefront as we all look after the place we love.
