Things to know for the 2024 IRONMAN New Zealand

IRONMAN New Zealand hits Taupō this Saturday 2 March in its 40th anniversary year!

The community gets right behind the athletes and the hundreds of incredible volunteers make this such a special event for the district. The event village and finish line are situated on Tongariro North Domain.

This year athletes are also competing for qualifying slots to enter the Vinfast IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. For the first time ever they’ll be in New Zealand, right here in the Taupō District in December!

There will be a lot of cyclists out training around the district, so please keep an eye out and give them a wide berth.

Road closures

Speed restrictions and road closures are in effect from 7am Friday 1 March until 3am Sunday 3 March.

There’s no denying it will be a bit busy getting around. We really appreciate your support as we try to keep everyone safe and minimise disruption on race day.

Road closures starting on Friday 1 March:

  • Lake Terrace from Rifle Range to Tui Street From 7am Friday to 2.30am Sunday
  • Rifle Range Road from Lake Terrace to Robert Street from 7am Friday 1 March to 7pm Saturday 2 March

Road closures on Saturday 2 March only:

  • Lake Terrace from Mere Road to Napier Road from 6am – 7pm
  • Kaimanawa Road from Lake Terrace to Robert Street from 2am – 7pm (access remains open for EV charging and Fire Station access only)
  • Rifle Range Road from Lake Terrace to Mere Road from 2am – 7pm
  • Rifle Range Road from Mere Road to Tauhara Road from 6am – 7pm
  • Tauhara Road from AC Baths Ave to Miro Street from 6am – 7pm
  • Broadlands Road from Miro Street to Taupō Boundary from 6am – 6.30pm
  • View Road from Aratiatia Road to Broadlands Road from 6am – 3pm
  • Centennial Drive from Rakanui Road to Broadlands Road from 6am – 3pm
  • ETA and Broadlands Road offramps (north and south bound) from 6am – 6.30pm

Road closures starting on Saturday 2 March and going to Sunday 3 March:

  • Tongariro Street (north bound lane) from Ferry Road to Spa Road from 2am Saturday to 2.30am Sunday
  • Tongariro Street (south bound lane) from Tuwharetoa Street to Roberts Street from 2am Saturday to 2.30am Sunday
  • Lake Terrace from Ruapehu Street to Mere Road from 2am Saturday to 2.30am Sunday
  • Roberts Street from Tongariro Street to Ruapehu Street from 2am Saturday to 3am Sunday

Changes to the marina and bus stop

🚌 Tongariro Street Bus Stop will be closed so buses will temporarily operate from Pāora Hapi Street from Saturday 2 March 2am to Sunday 3 March 2.30am

⚓ Taupō Boat Harbour and Marina are open with access via Redoubt Street. There will be no access from Ferry Road.

Broadlands Road landfill closed

As Broadlands Road will be closed, the Broadlands Road Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre will be closed for the day on Saturday 2 March.

Normal opening hours will resume on Sunday 3 March.
