Tackling trash on Earth Day
Volunteer divers scoured the lakebed and collected a full bag of rubbish each, which was mostly made up of glass bottles, aluminium cans, bottle caps, and plastics.
Common finds throughout the morning were zip ties, bottle caps, bottles, cans, junk food wrappers, and takeaway packaging. There were also lots of socks and dirty nappies.
“As much as these litter pick-up events are fun and a great community experience, I’d love if we didn’t have to do them, and people were responsible for their own litter,” Shannon said.
“People need to realise that what they are throwing out on the street doesn’t just go away, it can end up poisoning our beloved lake and the animals that live within it.
“Please take your rubbish home with you and dispose of it responsibly, it really does make a huge difference to the health of our local environment.
“A heartfelt thanks to everyone that came along to celebrate Earth Day this year.”
