Basketball royalty to attend Mangakino basketball court opening

New Zealand basketball royalty will be in attendance when Mangakino’s brand-new basketball court is unveiled.

The court is nearing completion and locals can now mark Saturday 18 May on their calendars for the grand opening.

One attendee with the skills required to test the new court is former New Zealand Breaker and Tall Black Tom Abercrombie. Abercrombie, a four-time National Basketball League champion, will be there to open the court and shoot hoops with local tamariki.

The court is being installed by Court Kings and owner Hayden Allen, a former Tall Black himself, will also be in attendance.The new court will be blessed and there will be food and music to celebrate the completion of this project.

The planning for this project was a true community affair with local children voting for the colours used on the court. The winning colours were an eye-catching combination of purple and yellow, with many of the children naming the LA Lakers colours as the reason for their choice.

The project includes a basketball court, adjustable height hoops, fencing, shelter, and seating will be upgraded in the coming months.
