Free tyre recycling has arrived
Tyred of wasting money throwing away old car tyres? Well now they can be recycled for free.
6.5 million tyres reach their end-of-life use every year in New Zealand, with only about 40 percent of those being recycled.
The new Tyrewise scheme means you can dispose of up to five worn-out tyres for free. Tyres will be managed responsibly and rather than go to landfill or be dumped, they will be turned into useful things like playground matting.
Taupō District Council’s landfill and transfer stations throughout the district will still accept tyres for now, but we’d rather everyone, including tyre generators or shops, use this free recycling option.
If you want to save money and the environment, take your old car tyres to one of the registered organisations in the district: Neil’s Tyres Taupō and Auto Super Shoppe Taupō.
