Road Safety team teaching scooter safety in schools
Taupō District Council's road safety team, thanks to generous funding from The Lion Foundation, has been offering free scooter safety courses to local primary school kids.
Tamariki learn the five key elements of safe scootering:
🛴 Start safe: Wear a helmet and shoes, set up handlebars, clamps up tight, check brakes work and wheels spin.
🛴 Stop safe: Use your brake to slow down, practise the hop stop for quick stops.
🛴 Cross safe: Always walk your scooter across the road, choose safe places to cross, use the kerb drill- stop, look , listen.
🛴 Share safe: Ride with an adult or older friend, give other people lots of space, slow down or stop when passing.
🛴 Stay safe: Watch out for hazards like stones and bumps, always stop and check for cars at sneaky driveways.
With a bit of practice, scooter-riding can be both fun and safe for everyone.
