Road closures for 2024 Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge
Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge is taking place on Saturday 30 November. Taupō District Council continues to proudly support and host this fantastic event since its inception in 1977. Shops are open and the district will be buzzing as we welcome all visitors, riders and supporters for New Zealand’s largest cycling occasion.
Start lines are on Tongariro Street for Taupō and Hirangi Street in Tūrangi, with all finishers crossing the line on Tongariro Street heading into the event village on Tongariro Domain.
Get out and about to watch the action this Saturday and however you’re involved, have a fantastic and safe weekend.
Road closure times
Temporary road and lane closures will be in place across many areas of the district this Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November. To keep competitors, event officials and spectators safe, these closures take effect at varying times over the weekend. Check the below in advance of travelling.
Central Taupō
- Tongariro Street (North bound lane) from Story Place to Spa Road will be closed from Friday 29 November 10am until Saturday 30 November 10pm.
- Tongariro Street (both lanes) between Roberts Street/Ferry Road and te Heuheu Street will be closed Saturday from 4am until 10pm.
- Tongariro Street (South bound lane) from Spa Road to te HeuHeu Street will be closed on Saturday from 4am until 10.30am.
- Redoubt Street from Tongariro Street to Story Place will be closed on Saturday from 5.30am to 10.30am.
- Tītīraupenga Street from Lake Terrace to Roberts Street will be closed on Saturday from 4am to 10pm.
- Roberts Street from Tongariro Street to Ruapehu Street will be closed on Saturday from 4am to 10pm.
- Roberts Street (West bound lane) from Tītīraupenga Street to Ruapehu Street will be closed on Saturday from 4am to 10pm.
- Lake Terrace from Mere Road to Tītīraupenga Street (West bound lane) will be closed on Saturday from 8am to 4pm.
- Norman Smith Street and Wairākei Drive junction will have reduced speeds and Stop/Go traffic management on Saturday from 5.30am to 9.30am.
Tūrangi
- Length of the Lake starts on Hirangi Road, Tūrangi with Stop/Go management in place on Saturday from 11am to 12pm.
- Intersection of Hirangi Road with State Highway 41 for Southbound traffic will have a Stop/Go in place on Saturday.
- Intersection of State Highway 41 with State Highway 1 for Northbound traffic will have Stop/Go in place on Saturday.
Poihipi Road area
- Poihipi Road from Wairakei Drive to Whangamata Road (West bound lane) will be closed on Saturday from 5.30am to 10.30am.
- Poihipi Road and Oruanui Road junction will have reduced speeds and Stop/Go traffic management on Saturday from 5.30am to 10.30am.
- Poihipi Road and Tihoi Road junction will have reduced speeds and Stop/Go traffic management on Saturday from 6am to 11am.
- Whangamata Road and Poihipi Road junction will have reduced speeds and Stop/Go traffic management on Saturday from 5.30am to 10.30am.

SH32, SH41, and SH1 are all open, but keep an eye out for planned works from NZTA and areas with reduced speeds and Stop/Go management.
Access to police station, marina and dump station
- Access to Taupō Police Station and the Marina, tennis club and bowling club on Saturday 30 November from 5.30am to 10.30am is via te Heu Heu Street and Story Place, and from 10.30am is via Redoubt Street.
- Cyclists will be on Redoubt Street and around the marina area from about 10.30am so you may experience delays if using this area.
- Riverside Park Dump Station on Redoubt Street will be closed from 5.30am until 10.30am Saturday 30 November.
Bus stop temporary move
- The bus stop on Tongariro Street will temporarily move to Pāori Hapi Street (opposite the Fine Fettle Café) from 9am Friday 29 November to 11pm Saturday 30 November.
