Representation changes proposal moves ahead

Taupō District Council will now put forward its preferred representation arrangements for the next two local government elections in the district. The move follows deliberations this week on residents’ and ratepayers’ submissions regarding the council’s initial proposal.

The voting areas (wards) and boundaries are proposed to remain unchanged from the 2019 local elections.

An appeal period for those who made submissions on the initial proposal is open until 4.30pm on Monday 18 October 2021. After the closing date for appeals, any appeals received will be forwarded on to the Local Government Commission (LGC). Because the final proposal does not comply with the Local Electoral Act 2001 in respect of the Mangakino/Pouakani and Taupō East Rural wards, the proposal will be referred to the LGC along with any appeals received. The LGC will then consider all information presented to it and make a final determination. This will be completed before 11 April 2022.

Taupō District Council undertook a review of the district’s representation arrangements, following the decision to introduce a Māori ward.

Thank you for all of the submissions received. Submissions closed on August 9 2021.

Initial hearings took place on Tuesday, August 24 2021, followed by further hearings and council deliberations on Monday, September 13 2021. Both meetings can be viewed on-demand on our YouTube channel.
