Reid’s Farm to close for safety improvements
Reid's Farm to close for safety improvements
19 March 2014
A popular Taupo camping spot will be temporarily closed for a week from Monday, March 31 to allow a stand of unsafe trees to be felled.
Reid's Farm Recreation Reserve on Huka Falls Road is one of the district's designated camping areas and is popular with both national and international visitors. It will be closed from Monday, March 31 to Friday, April 4 to allow for the poplar trees to be removed. The closure has been timed in an effort to keep disruption to campers at a minimum.
Parks asset manager Alison Rawley said the trees posed a potential hazard in high winds and public safety was paramount.
A couple of trees have previously come down in high winds, blocking the access in and out of the camping area, and we want to do all that we can to prevent that from happening again, she said.
We appreciate there may be some inconvenience caused by the closure but we wanted to have the work completed before the school holidays and Easter when it is usually a popular spot.
Reid's Farm would be reopened as soon as the work was completed.
