Future-proofing the place we love

The Taupō District is growing and we want our infrastructure to grow with it. To make sure we have a safe, resilient water and wastewater network that can cope with increased demand and future development, Taupō District Council are carrying out proactive infrastructure upgrades along Lake Terrace.

To maximise efficiency and minimise disruption we will be upgrading water mains and installing a new main trunk wastewater (sewer) main in stages over the coming months.

The project has been budgeted for in the Long-term Plan.

Key infrastructure areas

Upgrading water mains

To eliminate the risk of any existing drinking water pipe failures during the construction of the wastewater main, and to also take the opportunity of Lake Terrace being under construction, we will renew water mains along Lake Terrace and in some nearby street prior to the wastewater work getting under way.

New wastewater (sewer) mains

Once the water mains have been installed, we will be installing a new wastewater-rising main from Kara Place in Wharewaka to Kaimanawa Reserve near Rifle Range Road. This wastewater-rising main is needed not only to accommodate the growth in the southern end of Taupō town but to make the current system more resilient. The construction of this rising main will take place along Lake Terrace between March and November 2024.

Project FAQs

Installing the wastewater main along Lake Terrace means we can employ a gravity-feed system, as opposed to a pressurised, pumped system that would be required if we installed the main higher up, to the east of our residential areas.

A pumped system would require multiple pump stations, which would not only be much more expensive and require extensive maintenance but would carry the risk of wastewater leaks in the event of pump failure. A gravity system is simpler and therefore safer and easier to maintain.

Yes, there will be some road closures with detours in place, as well as stop/go traffic management. Our team has programmed the work into stages to minimise disruption as much as possible and we are asking everyone to follow the guidance of the team on the ground so that we can get this work done as quickly and safely as possible.

There will also be some open excavations in the road edges and berms, and while we will ensure these are barricaded and fenced off for the safety of you and your family, we ask that you use caution around the work sites.

No. Our team will be working closely with event providers and nearby businesses to ensure events can go ahead as planned and access is maintained.

There will be some disruptions to driveways when the team is installing pipes, but they will work closely and directly with residents to ensure they have access whenever required. There will also be some short water outages when we are connecting the new mains, but again the team will work with residents to ensure they have plenty of prior notice of this.

Sewer pipe install nears the end of the road

The second to last section of sewer pipe was installed on Lake Terrace this week and now there's only one final section of pipe to go in the ground. The last section of pipe will be installed via a trench so the team - and the road cones - will be largely off the road by the end of November.

Lake Terrace infrastructure progressing well

The new water and wastewater infrastructure along Lake Terrace is well on track, with nearly a kilometre of pipe installed so far. A further 480m of sewer main have now been welded - you can’t miss it if you drive past Taharepa Reserve - and is ready to be installed.

New sewer main progressing well

The installation of a new sewer main along Lake Terrace is making good progress, with work now moving to the Wharewaka area. This is the second phase of the project, with work being carried out along Lake Terrace from the Wharewaka Underpass area to Richmond Avenue.

Wherever possible the team will be drilling under existing footpaths and roundabouts, but there will be some open trenching at times so please use caution around the work sites and follow the directions of the traffic management team. This phase of the work should be completed by the end of June.

Infrastructure upgrades blessed and under way

A formal blessing by the Reverend Peace Mitchell has marked the start of a significant upgrade to Taupō’s wastewater network. The blessing was held at Kaimanawa Reserve on Wednesday morning, with representatives from iwi, Council, and contractors in attendance.
