Kinloch wastewater treatment plant upgrade
Project overview
The Kinloch wastewater treatment plant has been upgraded, to increase its capacity to treat wastewater and accommodate ongoing and future growth in Kinloch.
The $17.5 million upgrade is designed to improve the reliability and resilience of the plant and ensure we continue to manage our waste responsibly, in a way that protects people’s health and is environmentally sustainable.
Work on the upgrade started in February 2021 and was completed in May 2022. A huge thanks to the local community for their patience while construction was underway and a big shout out to our contractor, Spartan Construction, who have done a great job working through Covid-19 disruptions and supply chain issues to get the plant upgrade completed and online.

23 MAY 2022: Major Kinloch wastewater plant upgrade complete
A $17.5 million upgrade to the Kinloch Wastewater Treatment Plant has just been finished.
The upgrade works commenced in February 2021, not only to improve the treatment processes but to also make the system more resilient, and accommodate ongoing future growth in Kinloch.
Council infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said that contractors had done a great job working through Covid-19 disruptions and supply chain issues to get the plant upgrade completed and online.
20 OCTOBER 2021: Kinloch wastewater treatment plant upgrade nearing completion
Work to increase capacity at the Kinloch wastewater treatment plant has been progressing well, with work continuing throughout lockdown under strict COVID-19 protocols.
The $15.5 million upgrade will not only increase the plant’s capacity to treat wastewater but will accommodate ongoing and future growth in Kinloch.
15 APRIL 2021: Kinloch residents urged to temporarily reduce indoor water use during peak times
The Kinloch wastewater treatment plant upgrade to accommodate ongoing and future growth in Kinloch is tracking well with the bulk of earthworks on the outer perimeter completed and excavation for the two new 25-metre-long storage tanks nearly finished.
As part of these works, the capacity of the current treatment plant has been reduced to allow contractors to safely upgrade it. For day-to-day normal water use this is fine. However, during peak times and holiday periods our capacity will be stretched.
We’re asking the Kinloch community to help us out and be mindful of indoor water use during peak times. These include weekends – particularly long weekends such as ANZAC – and school holidays.
Tips to reduce indoor water use during peak times:
- Flush the toilet as little as possible – if it’s yellow, let it mellow
- Take shorter showers or shower with a friend!
- Make sure the washing machine is completely full before doing a load
- Only run the dishwasher when completely full
- Reduce water use as much as possible between 7am – 11am (peak time)
- Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth or shaving
We will be operating this way through to November so we can complete the work before the end of year busy period. Thank you for helping us to get on with safely upgrading the plant.
APRIL 15, 2021
To help reduce the pressure on the wastewater plant, there will be sucker trucks visiting the pump station that is located within the parking area behind the fire station. This will reduce additional inflows to the main wastewater treatment plant.
They will be pumping the following dates and times.
- Saturday, April 17and Sunday, April 18
- Saturday, April 24 through to Monday April 26 (ANZAC weekend)
- Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2
A handful of properties close to the pump station may notice some increased machinery noise in the morning and late afternoon on these days.
There may be instances where we need to do additional visits to the pump station as well, depending on the processing capacity of the wastewater plant. Keep an eye on this page for further updates.
We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for helping us to get on with safely upgrading the plant.
