New roundabout for Wairākei Dr, Karapiti and Huka Falls intersection
Project overview
Safety improvements to Wairākei Drive have seen a new roundabout put in place at the Karapiti Road-Huka Falls Road intersection.
As part of the Road to Zero strategy, Taupō District Council partnered with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to fund the roundabout at this intersection.
The construction work was done by Camex Civil, with the new roundabout fully opening in June 2024. As well as reshaping the intersection and building a new roundabout, the project also included moving power and fibre underground, relocating power poles, installing new cabling for streetlighting and adding new storm water pipes.
The new layout, along with the asphalt, kerbs and streetlights, provides better access for locals and visitors and makes this part of the district much safer for all users.

Wairākei Drive detour
Construction of the new roundabout on Wairākei Drive will see a detour in place from Thursday 14 March. The detour takes you via Huka Falls Road/Karetoto Road. On your way in or out of town, you can still access Huka Falls, Craters of the Moon, and all the other attractions in the area.
