New lease for Taupō Golf Club and Taupō Bridge Club

Introduction

The Taupō Golf Club Incorporated currently leases the recreation reserve at 130 Tauhara Road, Taupō and subleases part of it to Taupō Bridge Club Incorporated.

We want to know what the community thinks about a proposal to surrender the Golf Club’s lease, including its existing sublease to the Bridge Club. Council would then enter a new 33-year lease with the Golf Club and consequently a separate lease to the Bridge Club.

The lease area of around 128ha is a recreation reserve, subject to the Reserves Act 1977.

The Golf Club requires a longer lease term to meet its lender’s criteria to fund its development aspirations, which includes investing in its facilities to cater to the growing needs of its members and provide community opportunities. Although, strictly speaking, the existing sublease to the Bridge Club is not affected by any surrender of the Golf Club lease, it is proper that the position of the Bridge Club be dealt with at the same time.

About Taupō Golf Club

Taupō Golf Club opened in 1928 with a 9-hole course, which expanded to an 18-hole course, and added to by a separate 18-hole course. The golf club’s membership is currently 1109, across all age groups.

Looking forward to its centennial celebrations, the golf club wishes to invest in its facilities to cater to the growing needs of its members, and to provide opportunities to the Taupō community. These include an ongoing native tree planting programme, additional golf cart storage, and a ground floor hospitality option to enhance visitor and member experience.

What happens with my feedback?

Submitters may request to be heard in support of their submission or objection, and council will full give consideration to every objection or submission received before deciding whether to grant the leases.

When you make a submission, you will be given the option on whether you want to present your view to the Council in person. If you do, we will book a speaking time for you at the public meeting at 1pm on Tuesday 5 November 2024.

You will be given up to 5 minutes to present your submission and answer any questions. Council will consider all submissions, regardless of whether you wish to speak in person or not.

Following deliberations there will be a final decision on the granting of the new lease and we will communicate the outcome to you. Please note: all submissions will be made available to the public on the Council website in accordance with our Privacy Statement.
