There's a lot to know about what's happening in the Taupō District over the festive season. In the drop-down sections below you can find useful information about opening hours and services over this period.

Summary of opening hours over the festive season

  • All customer service centres are closed on Christmas Day.
  • On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve all customer service centres close at the earlier time of 12noon.
  • Customer service centres in Taupo and Turangi will be open for reduced hours on other public holidays.
  • Mangakino customer service centre will be closed on public holidays and weekends, and open for reduced hours on some other days.

Kerbside rubbish and recycling collections

If your normal kerbside collection day falls on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day or 2 January, your rubbish and recycling will be collected one day later than usual.

Landfill and Transfer Stations

Landfill, resource recovery centres and transfer stations will have normal operating hours except for Christmas Day when all facilities will be closed.

The Great Lake Taupō Big Bang – New Year’s Eve Celebration

On Tuesday 31 December 2024, Taupō District Council will be holding its annual New Year’s Eve Big Bang Firework Display at Tapuaeharuru Reserve on Roberts Street. There will be a ‘Mini Bang’ at 9.30pm followed by the ‘Big Bang’ at midnight.

  • On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve all libraries will close at the earlier time of 12noon.
  • Mangakino Library will be open for reduced hours on some other days, as listed below.

  • Normal opening hours of 10am to 4.30pm apply on all other days.

AC Baths

  • The AC Baths is open every day over the holiday period, except Christmas Day.
  • On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the pools close at the earlier time of 12noon.
  • Opening hours are reduced slightly on other public holidays.

Tūrangi Turtle Pools

  • The Turtle Pools are open every day over the holiday period, except Christmas Day.
  • On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the pools close at the earlier time of 12noon.
  • Opening hours are reduced slightly on other public holidays.

Mangakino Community Pool

The Mangakino Community Pool will be open every day over the holiday period, excluding Christmas Day, and will close for the season on Sunday 23 February 2025.

  • The Fitness Studio is open every day over the holiday period, except Christmas Day.
  • On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the Fitness Studio closes at the earlier time of 12noon.
  • Opening hours are reduced slightly on other public holidays.

Rockwall closing 5 January and will reopen 1 March 2025

The Rockwall closes on Sunday 5 January and will reopen on Saturday 1 March 2025 after maintenance work on the stadium floor has been completed.

We want you to have fun this New Year period, but it's important to do it safely and be responsible!

A permanent alcohol ban applies at the following locations:

  • Taupō town centre
  • Paetiki Shopping Centre in Taupō
  • Otumuheke Stream bathing area in Spa Thermal Park.

In addition, over the New Year period from 12 noon December 27 until 7am January 4 there is an alcohol ban which covers:

  • Tūrangi town centre
  • Lakefront reserves in the Taupō District
  • Hipapatua Reserve (Reid's Farm) in Taupō.

An alcohol ban also applies in the Mangakino town centre between 7pm Friday and 7am Sunday, plus all public holidays.

Applications can still be made online, but please be aware LIMs, building and resource consents, and LGOIMAs will not be processed between Friday 20 December 2024 and Friday 10 January 2025. These dates are considered non-working days under legislation.

Animal management and noise control
Regulatory services, like animal management and noise control, will be available over the Christmas period. They can be contacted through our regular after-hours phone service on 07 376 0899 or 0800 ASK TDC (0800 275 832).

Dog exercise areas
There are a number of designated areas around our district where dogs can be exercised freely off the leash. A reminder that dogs are prohibited at all times on council sports grounds and children’s play equipment areas.
