Kerbside rubbish and recycling collections

Changes to collection days

This holiday season will be a little different with kerbside collections to run a day later than usual over the two-week period between Christmas Day and Thursday 4 January (other than Friday 29 December when there is no change), as detailed in the table below.

Remember it’s a super busy time for our contractors over this period with larger volumes of rubbish and recycling than usual to pick up, especially cardboard! Extra trucks and staff will be working - you may see two trucks picking up your recycling during the busiest times.

Please help out our hardworking contractors by following these quick tips:

• Have your rubbish and recycling kerbside by 7.30am on the day of collection.
• Collections are likely to run later in the day than usual and at times, may extend into the following day so if your rubbish or recycling hasn't been picked up you can leave it out for collection the next morning.
• Remember, only plastic types 1, 2 and 5 can be recycled - all other plastic goes in the rubbish.
• Flatten cardboard boxes and remove lids from washed plastic bottles.
• Separate your recycling into three product streams, using three different bins.

Landfill and Transfer Stations

Landfill, resource recovery centres and transfer stations will have normal operating hours except for Christmas Day when all facilities will be closed.

Taupō District Libraries

• All Taupō District Libraries are closed on public holidays and observed public holidays.
• Mangakino Library will be open for reduced hours on some other days, as listed below.

Taupō Museum

• Taupō Museum is closed on Christmas Day.
• On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the museum will close at the earlier time of 2pm.
• Normal opening hours of 10am to 4.30pm apply on all other days.

AC Baths

• The AC Baths is open every day over the holiday period, except Christmas Day.
• Opening hours vary on public holidays and some other days throughout the holidays.
• Normal opening hours resume from Wednesday 3 January 2024.

• The Turtle Pools is open every day over the holiday period, except Christmas Day.
• Opening hours vary on public holidays and some other days throughout the holidays.
• Normal opening hours resume from Friday 5 January 2024.

Mangakino Community Pool

The Mangakino Community Pool opened for the summer on Monday 11 December 2023. The pool will be open every day over the holiday period, excluding Christmas Day, and will close for the season at 6pm on Monday 5 February 2024.

Fitness Studio

• The Fitness Studio is open every day over the holiday period, except Christmas Day.
• Opening hours vary on public holidays and some other days throughout the holidays.
• Normal opening hours resume from Wednesday 3 January 2024.

Taupō Rockwall

• The Taupō Rockwall is open daily throughout the school holidays, other than the public holidays on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and 2 January 2024.

New Year’s Eve Big Bang Firework Display

On Sunday 31 December 2023, Taupō District Council in partnership with Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board and Temple Productions will be holding its annual New Year’s Eve Big Bang Firework Display at Tapuaeharuru, Roberts Street.

Get ready for the New Year with two fireworks displays - at 10pm and midnight - plus live bands, food trucks, face painting and lots of family-friendly activities from 6.30pm right through to midnight!

Alcohol ban areas

We want you to have fun this New Year period, but it's important to do it safely and be responsible!

A permanent alcohol ban applies at the following locations:

• Taupō town centre
• Paetiki Shopping Centre in Taupō
• Otumuheke Stream bathing area in Spa Thermal Park.

In addition, over the New Year period from 12 noon December 27 until 7am January 4 there is an alcohol ban which covers:

• Tūrangi town centre
• Lakefront reserves in the Taupō District
• Hipapatua Reserve (Reid's Farm) in Taupō.

An alcohol ban also applies in the Mangakino town centre between 7pm Friday and 7am Sunday, plus all public holidays.
