Ngāti Kahungunū ki Wairarapa
The Mangakino/ Pouākani area is important in that a large proportion of the Māori community draw their ancestry from within the Ngāti Kahungunu people of the Wairarapa area.
Many of the current Māori residents descend from those who relocated to the Mangakino Pouākani area in 1910, and have been born and raised in Mangakino.
Ngāti Tūwharetoa – Office of the Ariki
Sir Tumu Te Heuheu is the current Ariki of his line. His office is based in Tūrangi.
Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board
Established in 1926, the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board (TMTB) held its inaugural meeting at Tokaanu on 24 November 1926. Hoani Te Heuheu (Tukino VI) was elected as the first Chairman and Puataata Alfred Grace as the first Secretary.
The TMTB is the owner of the lake bed, the water column and airspace above the lake. It manages these on behalf of the iwi members of Ngāti Tūwharetoa. The Trust Board is currently constituted under the Māori Trust Boards Act 1955.
Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa
Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa is the mandated post-settlement entity established as a result of the settlement of the Tūwharetoa Comprehensive Claims.
Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa includes 26 hapū, with each hapū appointing a mandated delegate and an alternate to represent their views, priorities and aspirations.
Te Poari Mahi is the executive operational arm of Te Kotahitanga.
Ngāti Turangitukua
On 26 September 1998, the Crown signed a Deed of Settlement with Ngāti Tūrangitukua. The Ngāti Tūrangitukua Claims Settlement Act 1999 gives effect to this settlement which encompasses the claims regarding the establishment and development of the Tūrangi township. The Ngāti Tūrangitukua Charitable Trust is the post settlement entity set up to manage the Ngāti Tūrangitukua settlement (Wai 84 the Tūrangi Township settlement).

In July 2022, Council entered into a Mana Whakahono ā Rohe agreement with Ngāti Tūrangitukua. The agreement covers Resource Management Act [RMA], Local Government Act and Reserve Act matters. The Tūrangi Co-Governance Committee - made up of an equal number of Ngāti Tūrangitukua and council appointees - is governing the implementation and fulfilling the purpose and functions as prescribed in the Mana Whakahono ā Rohe Agreement.
Ngāti Raukawa
Ngāti Raukawa iwi has mana whenua in the north western parts of our district, and around Mokai. The Raukawa Settlement Trust (RST) is the post settlement governance entity of Ngāti Raukawa and is the governance arm of the Raukawa Group.
The RST was established in 2009, however, its roots stretch back to 1987 when the Raukawa Trust Board was established.
Ngāti Manawa
Ngāti Manawa's area of interest includes the north eastern parts of our district. Along with Taupō District Council, Ngāti Manawa is a member of the Rangitaiki River Forum established to protect and enhance the health and wellbeing of the Rangitaiki River.
Ngāti Whare
Along with Taupō District Council, Ngāti Whare is a member of the Rangitaiki River Forum established to protect and enhance the health and wellbeing of the Rangitaiki River.
Ngāti Hineuru
Ngāti Hineuru's area of interest includes the Rangitaiki plains in our district. Te Kopere o te iwi o Hineuru Trust is the post-settlement governance entity established to receive, hold, and manage the Ngāti Hineuru settlement.
Te Arawa River Iwi Trust (TARIT)
Te Arawa River Iwi Trust represent the interests of the three Te Arawa River Iwi located within the Upper Waikato River catchment area. In 2009 TARIT signed a Deed of Settlement in relation to a co-management framework for the restoration of the Waikato River. The legislation, the Waikato River Act was passed in 2010.
Taupō District Council has a joint management agreement in place with TARIT. Taupō District Council engages and works with TARIT at both an operational and governance level.
CNI Iwi Holdings Limited
The CNI Iwi Collective is a confederation of eight iwi from the central North Island region including Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Manawa and Ngāti Raukawa.
Ngāti Tahu - Ngāti Whaoa
Ngāti Tahu - Ngāti Whaoa area of interest includes the north eastern parts of our region. It is one of the three iwi entities represented on TARIT.
