Nominations for by-election open
Nominations for the position on Taupō District Council vacated by Keith Crate are now open. Mr Crate resigned earlier this month due to ill health.
The by-election is for a position representing the Taupō-Kaingaroa ward. Nominations must be made before noon on Thursday, March 27.
Nomination forms are available from the council's office on Lake Terrace or online here. Candidates are asked to provide a photograph and statement to accompany their nomination, along with a $200 fee.
Deputy electoral officer Tina Jakes encouraged anyone who was considering running for the council to seize this new opportunity. This is a chance to help your community be heard and make a difference through local government, she said.
The by-election will be conducted by postal ballot in a similar way to the October 2013 elections. The successful candidate will be elected using the first past the post electoral system.
Voting papers will be sent out from May 1 and the ballot will close at noon on May 23. Preliminary results should be available later that day, with a declaration of the successful candidate following on May 27.

The council is required by law to hold a by-election to replace Mr Crate.
