We have recognised the need for a more co-ordinated approach to managing stormwater in the district's urban areas.
Our aim is to have a public stormwater drainage system in new and existing urban areas that better protects people, property and the environment from the risk of flooding, erosion and water pollution. We also aim to have a system that considers the appropriate level of financial investment and social, cultural and environmental benefits.
The Stormwater Strategy highlights the main issues which stormwater management must address. These are:
- Flooding
- The functioning of overland flowpaths
- Degradation of Lake Taupo, the Waikato River system and aquatic environments in terms of local effects on water quality
- Public health and safety.
It provides guidance to our staff for the further development of our Stormwater Asset Management Plan, Stormwater Management Plan and ongoing compliance with Comprehensive Discharge Consents.
