Information for voters
You need to be enrolled on either the resident or non-resident ratepayers electoral roll for the Taupō District to be entitled to vote.
Postal voting
If you were enrolled to vote before Friday, August 16 2019, you will receive your voting papers in the mail by Wednesday, September 25 2019.
Your voting pack will include a candidate profile book, personalised voting papers and a freepost return envelope. Once you have filled in your voting papers, put them in the freepost envelope provided and put it in the post by Monday, October 7 to make sure it arrives in time to be counted.
You can also put your envelope in the ballot box at your nearest Taupō District Council office before voting closes at noon on Saturday, October 12 2019.
Special voting
You will need to cast a special vote if:
- you have not enrolled to vote by August 16, 2019 but you qualify as an elector
- you do not receive your voting papers, or you receive your papers but they are damaged or spoiled.
- you are going to be overseas during the election period
- you are on the unpublished roll
You can either pick up your special voting pack from your nearest Taupō District Council office, or we can post it to you. The completed voting papers must be returned to the Electoral Officer in the envelope supplied.
Voting and wards
The Taupō District is made up of four electoral wards. Where you live, determines which ward you get to vote in and how many elected members you get to vote for. The exception to this is your vote for Mayor.
The Taupō District Council election will be for the mayor and 11 councillors, including one from the newly established Taupō East Rural ward, seven from the Taupō ward and two from Turangi/Tongariro. No election is required for the Mangakino-Pouakani Ward as one nomination was received for the one vacancy.
There will also be an election for the Turangi/Tongariro Community Board which will include two members from the Tongariro subdivision. No election is required for the Turangi town subdivision as four nominations were received for the four vacancies.

Enrolling to vote
In New Zealand, enrolment for all elections is managed by the Electoral Commission. If you voted in previous local or parliamentary elections, you should still be enrolled. If you have moved recently, you may need to update your details.
Taupō District residents
If you are a Taupō District resident and already enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll for the general election, you are automatically enrolled to vote in the local government elections.
If you're not on the parliamentary electoral roll in the Taupo District area, you can enrol or change your contact details on the Electoral Commission website.
Non-resident ratepayers
If you pay rates on a property in a different area to where you live, you may be eligible to enrol on the non-resident ratepayer electoral roll. Companies, businesses, trusts, corporations or societies which are ratepayers of a property in the district or community board area may also nominate an elector to vote on their behalf. The elector needs to reside outside the district or community board area where the property is situated.
This also applies to partners, joint tenants and tenants in common who collectively pay rates on a property in the Taupō District.
