Project overview
Construction on the Great Lake Pathway upgrade got under way in January 2020.
The upgraded section will be from the water treatment plant on Lake Terrace, opposite Rifle Range Road, to Kowhai Road at Rainbow Point.
The final costs of the project are $4,160,000 and cover widening and improving the walkway surface, addressing safety concerns, important erosion control work, and improved design that will reflect the values of local hapu.
The upgrade will provide significant long-term benefits for the community, our visitors, our lakefront environment and our economy.
The majority of funding for the upgrade will come from the 2018-2028 Long-Term Plan.
Benefits of the project
The widening of the path and erosion control works will create a more user-friendly experience for visitors and locals, accommodate an increase and changing use of our lakefront and enhance the cultural importance of this outstanding natural area.
We are working closely with local hapu and landowners on the lakefront and will also be adding design elements to reflect their values.
From the 2022 IRONMAN world championships event alone, which relies on an upgraded path to accommodate the number of participants competing, we will see $19.5 million brought into our district.
Access to the lakefront
We will be working to minimise disruption for users of the path, with alternative routes included where possible.
Timeframes and progress
The work will be completed in stages, beginning in January 2020 and is expected to be complete by October 2020 – weather permitting. The project was originally scheduled to be complete by August 2020 but has been pushed out due to the Level 4 lockdown and the subsequent delays this has caused.
The first section of the upgraded Great Lake Pathway - stretching from Rainbow Point to the Two Mile Bay boat ramp - was officially opened on March 3, 2020.
Project updates
SEPTEMBER 3, 2020
A popular area of the Great Lake Pathway is taking on a new look with some massive rocks taking centre stage.
These kohatu or rocks from Mount Tauhara have been placed at the entrance ways to the Waipāhihi C75 foreshore reservation, as part of a partnership with the trustees of Waipāhihi Marae.
Landscape architect Fraser Scott said the new additions were a huge undertaking – in more ways than one!
“The rocks were craned in this week and complement the new plantings. It took an effort to get them in, but it’s well worth it. It all looks fantastic,” he said.
“We are fortunate to have the use of the land. The Marae trustees and Tuwharetoa designer, Kingi Pitiroi have done some great work to recognise the people and places attached to these significant lands.”
AUGUST 7, 2020
It’s all go on the Great Lake Pathway upgrade with another new section of path open on Lake Terrace, between Tui Street and Rifle Range Road. Only a small stretch of path on Lake Terrace just north of Mere Road is still to be concreted, otherwise everybody can move along the new widened concrete path that runs the length of Lake Terrace, from the boat harbour to hot water beach and onto Rainbow Point.
