Tips for Taupō locals
About Supercars
What’s so super about a Supercar?
Supercars are loosely based on road-going cars but have been modified to make them lighter and super speedy.
The Repco Supercars Championship is the premier motorsport category in Australasia and one of Australia’s biggest sports. Globally, it is recognised as the best touring car category in the world.
We can expect over 20,000 people to flock to Taupō from 19 to 21 April to see them race at the 2024 ITM Taupō Super400 event.
Will it be very busy in Taupō that weekend?
It’s going to be busy around the entire Taupō District. We expect the visitor numbers to be similar to the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Those visitors will be visiting supermarkets, petrol stations, cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops. Holiday accommodation is already booking out in Taupō, Tūrangi, Mangakino and everywhere in between.
We can expect visitors to begin arriving from Monday 15 April onwards. The peak days will be the three days of racing from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 April. It will start to quieten down again from Monday 22 April.
How can I get involved in the action?
There are still some tickets available for Friday. If you miss out this year, there’s two other events planned for 2025 and 2026. On top of that, numerous community events planned for the weekend. There are also Supercars volunteer opportunities available.
Top tips for Taupō locals
Getting around
Expect more traffic in Taupō, like the Christmas and New Year holidays, and allow yourself extra travel time. There will be some roads closed and restricted access to others to allow people to enjoy the event safely. More info on road closures here. If possible, avoid driving near Taupō International Motorsport Park over the weekend, especially at peak times in the morning and from 4.30pm in the evening.
Supermarkets
You might find it’s best to use your local dairy or supermarket rather than heading to the main supermarkets over the Supercars weekend. If you can, plan ahead and shop the week before the event.
Broadlands Road Transfer station
Broadlands Road will be very busy over the weekend. If you can, delay your trip to Broadlands Road Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre until after the event or use one of the other transfer stations across the Taupō District.
Taupō District Council services
Some of our council teams and services (like our environmental rangers, kerbside refuse and recycling collectors, and customer services) will be working extra hard over that time. Please be patient during this busy period. If you have any issues you would like to report, please Contact Us and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
